Mount Gambier Central Caravan Park is a small, quiet park at 6 Krummel Street that walks to the Commercial Street shops and cafes, which is its whole appeal. Dogs are welcome, with the practical catch that they stay in your own setup on the west side of the park rather than in standard cabins.

Under the park's written pet policy, pets are only permitted on the west side, and only when you are staying in your own caravan, camper or tent. A 2 Bedroom Dog Friendly Cabin appears on the accommodation list, but the same policy page states pets are not allowed inside any park-owned cabins, so call the park on (08) 8725 4427 and confirm the arrangement before you book a cabin with a dog in tow.

The rules are the usual well-run-park set: leashed and under control at all times, never left alone at the site or in the vehicle, waste picked up immediately, and no excessive barking. Pets must be healthy and vaccinated, and restricted breeds may not be permitted.

Worth knowing

The park keeps a camp kitchen, grassed sites, barbecues and clean amenities, and its central position means shops and food are a few minutes on foot. Being city-based, there is no big exercise area on site, so plan real off-leash time elsewhere.

While you're out there

For off-lead exercise, Hastings Cunningham Reserve Fenced Dog Park is a short drive, and the Blue Lake Loop makes a fine on-lead leg-stretch. For morning coffee, San Piero Coffee Bar is walkable from the gate.
