Morisset Dog Exercise Area

Morisset Dog Exercise Area is the local off-leash spot at Gibson Oval on Awaba Street, a large open sports field that doubles as a community dog run whenever it's not booked for organised sport.

The rules. Off-leash is allowed except when sports or training sessions are using the oval, so check before you arrive if you're heading down midweek. Dogs need to be under effective voice control at all times, and must go back on the leash in the car park and surrounding streets. Clean up after your dog immediately.

What's there. There's a large free car park right beside the oval and public toilets on site, but no dog water taps, so bring your own water and a bowl. Shade is limited, mostly around the edges of the field.

Watch-outs. The oval is unfenced and opens onto surrounding streets, so keep a closer eye on dogs that bolt, especially near the car park.

Getting there. It's just off Awaba Street in the Morisset commercial area, an easy walk or short drive from Morisset railway station on the Newcastle & Central Coast line.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafes along Dora Street, including Biv's Coffeehouse and Bodyfuel Cafe, have outdoor seating for a coffee stop before or after. Lake Macquarie's foreshore around Bonnells Bay and Dora Creek is close by for a change of scenery.

When to go. Weekday mornings and late afternoons tend to be quieter than weekends. Good for confident, well-socialised dogs who won't bolt for the street.
