Avondale Dairy Walk

Avondale Dairy Walk is an easy, flat loop alongside Sandy Creek near Avondale University in Cooranbong, a relaxed 2 to 3 kilometre stretch that swaps between shaded rainforest and open paddocks. The swing bridge over the creek is the moment your dog will remember.

Leash status

Dogs must be kept on lead at all times. This is working farmland and creek-side bushland on the edge of the university's Avondale campus, and the on-lead rule protects both the wildlife along Sandy Creek and the stock in the adjacent paddocks.

Max: keep well clear of the paddock fences. Cattle share this trail's edges, and a lead dog that lunges at the fence line is the fastest way to turn a quiet walk into a stressful one.

Water and terrain

The track is well-defined and mostly gravelled, mixing shaded forest with open farmland, so expect sun exposure on the paddock sections. A suspension swing bridge crosses part of the creek; small or nervous dogs may need carrying across. There are no taps along the route, so bring water, and the path can get muddy after heavy rain.

Hazards

Cattle graze in paddocks alongside sections of the trail. Keep dogs well away from the fence lines and under control when stock are close. Snakes are a warm-month consideration on any Lake Macquarie bushland walk, and the bridge itself can be slippery when wet.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Freemans Drive then University Road, with a small free car park near the trailhead. The route is a short walk from the nearest bus stop on the main road. Weekday mornings are the quietest; Saturday mornings bring more local runners.

Close by with the dogs

For off-lead time after the loop, the Morisset Dog Exercise Area or the Dora Creek Dog Exercise Area are both within a short drive. Relish Coffeehouse on Freemans Drive is five minutes away for the post-walk coffee, and Creekside Estate suits a dog-friendly base if you are staying over.
