Pizzey Offleash Dog Area

The off-leash area in Pizzey Park is one of the central Gold Coast's most popular dog spots, and the draw is water: a shallow, sandy lake edge where dogs can wade and swim, sitting alongside big open lawns for a proper run. The City of Gold Coast manages the precinct, which is best known for its tennis centre, skate park and sports clubs, so expect a working park rather than a quiet reserve.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only inside the signed designated area, which includes a fenced agility course for dogs that need a contained space. Stay on-lead through the surrounding sports fields, car parks and paths, and keep your dog out of the children's playgrounds, where dogs are prohibited outright. Bins are on site, and picking up is enforced. When off-lead, dogs must be under effective voice control at all times.

The water

The lake edge is a gentle sandy bank rather than surf, which makes it a good first swim for cautious dogs and puppies. The waterline shifts with the seasons: lower levels expose more beach to run on, higher levels give deeper swimming. Because it is a closed lake system, check the council's park page for water-quality warnings after heavy rain before letting your dog dive in.

Max: the lake edge is the reason to come, but the fenced agility run is the reason to stay if your dog is still learning recall around water.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Pizzey Drive off Markeri Street, near the tennis club, with plenty of free on-site parking. Buses run along Southport-Burleigh Road a short walk away. Underfoot is mown lawn and sand around the water, with mature pines giving decent shade over the picnic tables and gas BBQs, and toilets on the precinct.

When to go

Weekend mornings and the late-afternoon window around 4pm to 6pm are when the local walking groups turn up, and the park runs hot through summer afternoons. Mid-morning on a weekday is the calm window if your dog is timid or still learning off-leash manners.
