Pizzey Offleash Dog Area

Pizzey Park's off-leash area at Mermaid Waters is one of the central Gold Coast's most popular dog spots, and the reason is the water: a shallow, sandy lake edge where dogs can wade and swim, sitting alongside big open lawns for a run. It is council-managed by the City of Gold Coast and busy with locals, but large enough to spread out.

The rules. Off-leash applies only within the designated area. Dogs must be on-leash through the surrounding sports fields and car parks, and under effective voice control at all times when off-leash. Dogs are prohibited from the children's playgrounds in the wider park. Pick up after your dog; bins and bags are provided.

The water. The lake edge is a gentle sandy bank rather than surf, which makes it good for cautious swimmers and dogs new to water. The waterline shifts, so a lower level exposes more beach and a higher level gives deeper swimming. It is a closed lake system, so check the council park page for any water-quality warnings after heavy rain before letting a dog swim.

What's there. A separate fenced agility section for dogs that need secure boundaries, covered picnic tables, gas BBQs, toilets, and shade from mature pines. Plenty of on-site parking.

Getting there. Access is via Pizzey Drive off Markeri Street, near the Mermaid Waters Tennis Club. There is ample free parking on-site, and bus routes run along nearby Southport-Burleigh Road.

Nearby with the dogs. Dog-friendly cafes are a short drive away, including Mercado and Two Birds One Stone Q, both of which take dogs at their outdoor tables for a coffee after the swim.

When to go. It is busiest on weekend mornings and weekday afternoons around 4-6pm when the local walking groups gather. Mid-morning on a weekday is the calm window, best for a timid dog or one still learning off-leash manners.
