Plan a late breakfast rather than a late lunch. The outdoor section is airy and generous, which helps on the humid Gold Coast mornings when indoor air-conditioning tempts but the dog is with you.

The Q Super Centre sits off Sunshine Boulevard at Mermaid Waters, and the centre's ample free parking makes arrival simple. Shop B10 is inside the centre precinct, so head for the main dining strip and the outdoor tables are hard to miss.

Pizzey Park is the standout pairing a short drive away: a fenced off-leash area with an agility course and a lake dogs can actually swim in, entered off Bardon Avenue or Pizzey Drive.
