George Burnett Park

George Burnett Park is a general public reserve of the City of South Perth fronting Manning Road, and it works as a steady on-lead walking park rather than a dog playground. The council is clear that dogs are permitted on lead at all times across its paths and open spaces, so this is a place for a structured walk, training loops and a sniff around the grass, not off-lead fetch.

Leash status and the rules

On lead, always, is the council's position for this reserve: it is not a designated dog exercise area. Dogs also have to stay at least five metres from playgrounds and any active sporting events, which matters on weekends when the playing fields are in use. Keep the lead short as you pass the play equipment and any game underway, carry waste bags, and the rest of the park is open to you. The adjacent leisure centre precinct is busy at peak times, so the quieter grassed corners suit a dog that is still getting used to parks.

Walking the reserve

The layout of paths and open lawn makes it easy to put together a loop of whatever length your dog needs, and the mature trees give shade across the middle of the day. Bring water from home, as you cannot rely on a bowl being available in a general reserve. Because the park sits in the middle of the suburb, it pairs naturally with the river corridors nearby rather than replacing them.

Getting there

The park runs along Manning Road in Manning, on the South Perth side of the Canning River, with street and adjacent car parking around the leisure centre. It is an easy detour off Manning Road between the Kwinana Freeway and the river, and morning before sport starts is the calmest window.
