Canning River Nature Walk

Canning River Nature Walk runs through Canning River Regional Park in Wilson, WA, starting near Kent Street Weir. The main loop covers 8.2 km of flat, easy walking, and dogs are welcome on lead the whole way, though they must stay out of the park's sensitive wetland and nature reserve sections.

The walk. The full loop is about 8.2 km, taking 1.5 to 2 hours on an easy, flat grade. Surface varies between paved shared paths, boardwalks and gravel, through wetlands, paperbark forest and riverside country. Shorter loops branch off too, including the separate Butterflies, Birds and Bridges Trail, a roughly 4 km option covered on its own page.

The rules. The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions manages the park with the City of Canning. Dogs must stay on lead at all times on the walk trails. The key access limit: dogs are not permitted in the sensitive wetland and nature reserve sections, and must stay at least 5 metres from playgrounds. Keep dogs away from riverbanks to protect wildlife habitat, and bring your own bags, as they are not always supplied on site.

Off lead. A fenced dog exercise area sits at the northern oval of Kent Street Weir Park in the same precinct, so you can pair the on-lead nature walk with off-lead time nearby.

Hazards. Snakes are common from October to April, so stay alert on the gravel sections. Boardwalks can get narrow and crowded, so keep dogs close when passing other walkers, and low-lying ground can turn damp and boggy after heavy winter rain.

Getting there. Free parking is at the Kent Street Weir car park on Fern Road, Wilson. From Perth CBD, take the Kwinana Freeway, exit onto Leach Highway, then onto Kent Street. Transperth buses serve Cannington nearby, and the closest train station is Queens Park, with a bus or taxi for the last stretch. Main pathways are pram and wheelchair friendly, and public toilets are on site.

When to go. Cooler months mean less snake risk and firmer ground, while early summer mornings avoid the heat on the exposed paved sections. Good for big runners after the full loop, and just as suited to seniors sticking to the flat paths near Kent Street Weir.
