Macleod Park Dog Off Leash Area

Macleod Park sits at 50 Chapman St, a short walk from the shopping strip on Macleod's main road, and Banyule City Council lists the whole reserve as a dog off leash area covering the sports ovals and walking paths. The one listing also flags a carpark, cricket and football grounds, a lake and a creek, a pavilion and public toilets, which is a lot of ground for one suburban park. For locals it works as the everyday exercise circuit and the somewhere bigger for the dog in the same trip.

The dog setup

Under the council's off leash listing, dogs can run free across the ovals and the walking paths that loop them, and the lake and creek edges give the walk some variety beyond open grass. Two rules from the same listing matter: dogs stay off the active playing surfaces where sport is actually being played, and leads go back on during organised sport. In practice that means a Saturday morning with junior cricket on the main oval sends you to the far oval or the path around the lake instead.

Worth knowing

The surface mix is the thing to read before you go. Ovals flood light and drain well after rain, the paths around the lake stay firmer in winter, and the creek line can hold water after heavy weather. Toilets and the pavilion sit mid park, so a longer loop never leaves you far from a tap or a seat, and the carpark off Chapman St takes the edge off weekend arrivals when the sports sides are warming up.

Macleod's café strip starts a block away. JIJI's and Touchstone Cafe both sit on the Macleod side of the rails for a coffee on the way home, and if the dog wants a second run, Banyule Flats Reserve in neighbouring Viewbank adds river flats to the day.
