Lilydale Lake East Dog Off Leash Area

The east off-leash area at Lillydale Lake is the quieter alternative to the park's busy north-west corner: a large, open grass space on the eastern side of the parklands off Swansea Road. Yarra Ranges Council designates the eastern and south-eastern edges as the off-leash zones, and this one suits dogs with strong recall who want an open field rather than a fenced run.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only inside the designated east zone; dogs stay on lead everywhere else around the lake, including the shared trails used to reach it. Council rules require the dog in sight and instantly recallable, a leash carried at all times, one adult supervising no more than two dogs, and 20 metres of distance from playgrounds, ovals, barbecues and picnic areas. Dogs are banned outright from the beach areas and fitness equipment zones. Pick up after your dog using the bins provided.

There are no water taps in the east zone, so bring your own dog water. The nearest public toilets sit at the main playground and picnic area a short walk away, and the gravel trail that circles the lake passes the zone for an on-lead warm-up or cool-down.

Max: this area is unfenced and sits close to busy Swansea Road. If it is crowded, keep your dog in tight so they do not drift toward the traffic.

The vibe

Weekday mornings and early evenings are calmest, while weekends from late morning to mid-afternoon fill up with families using the wider parklands. This is a zone for confident, well-recalled dogs rather than a social club; if your dog needs fences or playmates, the north-west area is the busier, better-attended choice.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Swansea Road, just south of the main lake entrance, with a dedicated car park at the reserve. The zone also connects to the gravel lake circuit. Lilydale Station is roughly a 15 to 20 minute walk for anyone arriving on the Belgrave or Lilydale lines.
