Mountview Park Fenced Dog Park

Mountview Park Fenced Dog Park sits inside the larger Mountview Park at 41 Bamford Lane, on the corner of Mill Drive in Kirwan. It is one of two off-leash options in the suburb and the one with the family-friendly extras: the fenced yards share the grounds with a shaded playground, electric barbecues, picnic tables and a toilet block.

The rules

Leads stay on in the car park and the general park grounds, with off-lead play only inside the fenced enclosures. Under Townsville City Council rules, dogs need to stay under effective control, you clean up using the bins provided, fill in any holes your dog digs, and remove a dog that gets aggressive or bothers others. Keep an eye on the gate behind you as playground families move through the same grounds.

What's on site

The enclosure splits into two fully fenced yards: a main general off-leash area and a separate smaller section reserved for small dogs, which keeps petite or timid breeds out of the main rough-and-tumble. Water is available for dogs, and shaded seating and picnic tables cover the owner side. Beyond the seating there is little natural shade, so summer middays are hard work without a plan.

Pepsi: use the small-dog yard on a first visit even for a confident dog. It lets you read the crowd before committing to the main enclosure.

The address is the corner of Bamford Lane and Mill Drive in Kirwan, with on-site parking and Townsville bus routes running along Bamford Lane. It is an easy stop from the northern suburbs and the Ring Road.

Worth knowing

Weekday mornings and early afternoons are the quiet windows. Weekends and the sunset stretch get busy, so aim outside those times if your dog is easily overwhelmed. Bring your own water bowl for the hotter months and check the ground after wet season rain, since Townsville's storm season can leave low spots soggy.

Close by with the dogs

Kirwan Dog Park at Lappin Place is the suburb's other fenced option with agility obstacles, and Gleeson's Weir Park Dog Off Leash Area at Cranbrook adds river access for a splash. Coffee at Jude's is a local cafe stop on the way home.
