Kirwan Dog Park

Kirwan Dog Park is a fully fenced off-leash area at 1 Lappin Place, tucked just off Bamford Lane in Townsville's northern suburbs and open around the clock. It is a separate park from the Mountview Park fenced run a short walk away on the same street, so there are two options in one pocket.

The rules

Dogs need to be leashed before entering and after leaving, and kept under effective voice control once off-leash inside. Fill in any holes your dog digs, use the bins provided, and pull your dog out immediately if it turns aggressive or disruptive.

Council rules require your dog to be registered, and you should not bring more dogs than you can comfortably supervise at once.

What's there

The park is fully fenced with shaded, undercover seating for owners, a set of dog agility obstacles, water taps and waste bags on site. Parking is available but limited, and it can fill up during busy periods.

Max: the ground turns to mud after heavy rain, so pack wipes for the trip home. Wet season visits are best saved for a dry day or two after the downpour.

It reads as a practical, well-maintained neighbourhood run rather than a destination park, and the agility gear gives working-breed energy somewhere to go. The council's registration and supervision rules are taken seriously by the regulars who use it in the quiet windows.

The address is 1 Lappin Place, reached off Bamford Lane, with local bus services running nearby. One honest caveat: the park sits close to a sewerage facility, which can produce an odour on some days.

When to go

Weekend mornings are the busiest stretch, with Thursday mornings and Sunday afternoons also popular. Weekday afternoons and Friday evenings are quieter if your dog prefers room to move.

The Mountview Park Fenced Dog Park is a short walk up the same street for a second fenced option, and Coffee at Jude's in Parkside Plaza does outdoor seating for a dog-side coffee stop a few minutes' drive away.
