Spring Gully Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Spring Gully Reserve's off-leash area sits on Spring Gully Drive in Keilor East, an open, slightly rustic stretch of grass that runs down to Steele Creek and links into the Steele Creek Trail. It is open around the clock, which makes it a genuinely flexible option for early or late walks rather than a daytime-only park.

The dog setup

This is an open reserve, not a fenced enclosure, so recall matters. Dogs can run off-leash away from the children's playground, then go back on the lead in the car park and on the surrounding paths. Keep at least 15 metres clear of the playground and the public barbecues, carry a lead at all times, and have your dog under reliable voice control throughout. If your dog has a strong prey drive, leash up near Steele Creek, which draws local birdlife.

On the amenity side there is a water fountain, a poo bag dispenser, shaded seating, a dual barbecue and a small playground near the entrance, with free off-street parking on site.

Max: the terrain is uneven in patches, so have a look around before letting a boisterous dog off the lead at a full run.

Worth knowing

Weekday mornings before 9am, the 4pm to 6pm slot and weekends are the busiest windows. Mid-morning on a weekday is quieter, and the southern end of the reserve tends to have fewer dogs if yours prefers space. Moonee Valley Council requires aggressive dogs to be leashed and removed immediately, so the etiquette here is straightforward: bags in hand, recall trained, problems resolved.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is reached off Keilor Road, with free on-site parking. Bus routes along Buckley Street stop within a short walk if you are coming without a car.

Close by with the dogs

If your dog needs a fully fenced yard rather than an open reserve, the Cliff Whitworth Reserve Dog Park in Essendon West is the closest alternative, and J.H. Allan Reserve is another Keilor East option. For a longer outing, the Maribyrnong River loop starts a short drive away.

For coffee afterwards, Niddrie's Mister Hoffman has a relaxed outdoor courtyard with water bowls a few minutes east.
