Birralee Reserve

Birralee Reserve is an open grassed reserve on Shaw Road in Innaloo, in the City of Stirling's inner northern suburbs. It is a neighborhood park built around its sports fields: ovals, training lights and club infrastructure take up much of the ground, with lawn and shade trees around the perimeter doing the rest. There is no cafe, no fencing and no dedicated dog agility gear here; what it offers is flat grass, room to move, and a formal off-leash status that many suburban reserves lack.

Under the City of Stirling's dog exercise areas, dogs may be off leash at Birralee Reserve provided they are under effective control. Two qualifications apply and both are worth knowing before you unclip. Off-leash access excludes scheduled sport training and match areas, so when fields are in use for a game or training session the dog stays leashed and well clear of the play. And this is not a fenced dog park: control means voice and recall you can rely on, not a boundary doing the work for you.

The reserve's working life is sport, so timing shapes the visit. Weekday mornings and the edges of the day are the quiet windows; when junior sport is on, the grounds are busy with people who have not come to meet your dog, and the sensible move is the perimeter loop on leash. The ground is well maintained by local accounts, and it doubles as a general picnic and walking space outside of fixtures. Bring water in summer; shade around the margins helps but the open oval itself is exposed. For newcomers, the practical kit is simple: a leash for the transitions, reliable recall for the off-leash stretches, and bags, since bins sit at the park edges rather than mid-field. Because the reserve is a single open landscape rather than a maze of paths, it suits dogs who want distance in their runs, and owners who want to see their dog the whole time; it is a less useful pick for dogs who treat every new person as an appointment.
