Greenvale Recreation Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

The off-leash area at Greenvale Recreation Reserve on Section Road is a big, open sporting reserve in Melbourne's north, built for a proper run rather than a quick lap. Wide gravel tracks wrap around grassy ovals shared with cricket nets, tennis courts and footy grounds, and there is enough room that a crowd rarely feels like one.

The dog setup

The reserve is not fully fenced, so this is a voice-control park: Hume City Council requires dogs off leash to stay within sight and under effective control, with a leash no longer than two metres carried and ready. Council rules also cap it at two dogs per person, ask that dogs be registered, and keep dogs off the ovals whenever matches, training or club bookings are on. Around playgrounds and pavilions, clip the lead back on and watch signage near the playing fields on game days.

The upside of the size is escape room: if the main oval gets busy, there is usually a quieter corner to peel off into, which helps dogs that get twitchy around boisterous groups.

What's on site

Rubbish bins are dotted around, parking sits south of the main oval with plenty of space, and a playground occupies the north-east corner. There is no dedicated dog water station, so bring a bowl and water for warmer days. The mix of open grass and gravel paths suits both sprinters and sniffers.

Max: room to actually run flat out, gravel to trot along, and a bin every few hundred metres. Works for me.

Getting there

It is easiest by car via Section Road, close to Mickleham Road. Public transport takes some doing: the closest stations are Roxburgh Park or Broadmeadows, both needing a connecting bus, so check PTV before relying on it. Saturday mornings and weekday evenings after 5pm draw the most dogs, so mid-week mornings are the quiet window.
