D.S. Aitken Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

D.S. Aitken Reserve on Dianne Avenue is a busy Hume City Council sports reserve in Craigieburn, and the dog draw is a designated off-leash area on the main oval. It is a practical suburban option: toilets, bins and parking on site, with the caveat that the oval fence has some gaps, so the secure feel depends on your dog's honesty at the gate.

The dog setup

The off-leash area is the oval itself; everywhere else in the reserve, including the playground, skate park and paths, stays on-lead. Hume's rules apply: full supervision, effective voice control, a leash carried for each dog, maximum two dogs per person, and no threatening or rushing people or animals. Scan the fence line and the gaps before you unclip, and keep clear of the AFL grounds and cricket pitches when they are in use. Pick up after your dog using the bin on the western side of the oval. There are no water taps in the off-leash zone, so bring your own.

The vibe

The open grass of the oval makes this a natural fetch spot, and weekends bring dog walkers and families to the adjacent playground. Weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are quieter, and if your dog is uneasy around kids, sidestep school pick-up and drop-off, when the playground side gets busy.

Max: the oval is fenced but not gap-free. Walk the perimeter once before the lead comes off, and position yourself away from the openings for a nervous dog's first run.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits near the corner of Craigieburn Road and Hothlyn Drive, with direct access from 27 Dianne Avenue and parking on the north side, including wheelchair-accessible bays. Craigieburn Station is a short trip away by car, and buses service the surrounding streets.
