Hartfield Park Dog Exercise Area is a designated off-lead zone in the Federation Gardens section of Hartfield Park, off Hale Road in Forrestfield. It has a natural, bush-like feel rather than a manicured park layout, and its drawcard is a pond that dogs can swim in.

The rules. Dogs can be off the lead in the designated exercise area, but must stay under effective voice control. Everywhere else in Hartfield Park is on-lead, and dogs are not allowed on the marked playing fields, in the playgrounds, or in the car parks. Zones shift near the active sporting fields, so follow the on-site signage. Pick up after your dog and bin it.

What's there. The pond for swimming, natural tree shade, and waste bins, though the bins can be sparse, so carry your own bags as backup. It is a large, informal space rather than a small enclosed run. The Hartfield Park Recreation Centre is close by if you want to combine the walk with other activities.

Watch-outs. Pond water quality varies, particularly through summer, so bring drinking water rather than relying on the dog drinking from the pond. This is bushland, so be snake-aware in the warmer months and keep to the open areas.

Getting there. The address is Hale Road, Forrestfield, in the Federation Gardens section. Drive in via Tonkin Highway and Hale Road, with parking in the broader Hartfield Park complex. Transperth buses serve the area near Hale Road.

When to go. Weekday mornings and mid-afternoon are the calmest. It gets lively on weekday evenings between 5 and 7pm and on weekend mornings from 8 to 10am. Good for confident, water-loving dogs with a reliable recall, given it is not fully enclosed.

The pond is the whole point. Bring a towel and expect a very happy, very wet dog on the drive home.
