Mason & Bird is the modern all-day cafe at 7 Williams Street in Kalamunda, set inside the library and visitor centre complex near the Zig Zag Cultural Centre in the Perth Hills. The outdoor terrace and balcony areas are dog friendly, walk-in only with no reservations, so roll up, grab an outdoor table and settle in after a hills walk.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome across the outdoor alfresco areas only, not the indoor dining room, and the terrace setup makes it easy to keep a leashed dog comfortable beside the table. Staff are generally accommodating, but bring your own water bowl rather than assuming one will appear. Because it is walk-in only, weekend mornings can mean a short wait for an outdoor table, particularly through the farmers market season.

Worth knowing

The menu leans brunch and lunch: gnocchi that gets named in reviews, burgers including a vegetarian option, poached eggs, gluten-free rolls and solid coffee. The cafe runs roughly 8am to 2pm daily for the kitchen, with evening service on some nights, so confirm before planning a late visit. The venue is wheelchair accessible, which also makes the outdoor area easy to work with a dog, and the pace is unhurried even when the room fills.

Getting there and parking

Williams Street sits in the Kalamunda town centre with free street parking plus a public car park beside the library and visitor centre. The Jorgensen Park Walk Trail is a short drive away and makes the natural morning pairing, and the Kalamunda Hotel is the other dog-friendly sitting in town if you are making a day of it.
