Wheelers Lane Park

Wheelers Lane Park, at the corner of Douglas Mawson Rd and Wheelers Ln in east Dubbo, runs a fenced off-leash dog exercise area under Dubbo Regional Council's published rules. That fence matters: it is the difference between a park where you keep one eye on the gate the whole visit and one where your dog can actually open up and run.

Council's rules for the enclosure are specific. Dogs must be under effective control of a handler aged 16 or over, must stay leashed until inside the enclosure and again on exit, and waste bags are required, so bring your own supply rather than relying on dispensers at the gate. Restricted breeds are excluded from the off-leash area entirely. Inside the fence, normal dog-park etiquette applies: watch your dog, mind the gate when entering and leaving, and step in early if play tips over.

The park sits on Dubbo's eastern side along Wheelers Lane, with parking at the reserve itself. It pairs naturally with the surrounding suburbs: residential streets, roomy verges and a short drive to the CBD or, in the other direction, the open country out toward the western plains attractions. Bring your own water for hot days; shade and summer heat are worth checking on arrival before committing to a long play session.

There are no separate small-dog and large-dog zones marked here, so judge the mix of dogs already inside before you enter. Peak times tend to be early morning and after work, and school holiday weekends bring occasional extra traffic. Because the rules come straight from council, they are authoritative rather than hearsay: if any signage on site differs from what you have read, follow the signage. As with any shared off-leash space, keep toys and high-value treats in your pocket until you have read the room.
