Belmont Park is a large multi-use reserve on Belmont Road East in Croydon South, built around a wide sports oval that doubles as off-leash space for dogs when no games are on. It's a solid pick for a dog that wants a proper open run rather than a fenced pocket park.

The rules. Dogs need to be under effective voice control while off-leash on the oval. If an organised sport, training session or school event is using the oval, leash up and use the surrounding paths instead. The children's playground, BBQ shelters and walking paths around the edge are on-leash zones at all times. Bins are on-site, so clean up after your dog.

What's there. Drinking fountains with dog-friendly bowls or taps, shaded picnic tables and benches, public toilets and a BBQ shelter. There's an on-site car park accessible from Belmont Road East or Olympus Drive.

Getting there. Drive via Canterbury Road onto Bayswater Road, then Belmont Road East. The closest train stations are Croydon and Bayswater on the Lilydale line, both a short rideshare from the park. Bus routes 664 (Chirnside Park to Knox City) and 670 (Ringwood to Lilydale) also run nearby.

Nearby with the dogs. SoulPod Cafe and Eastfield Coffee Co. are both close by in Croydon South if you want a coffee stop after the walk.

When to go. Tuesday evenings and Saturday afternoons are the busiest. Sunday mornings, Tuesday afternoons, and Wednesday and Thursday generally are quieter, good timing if your dog prefers a calmer, wide-open run without a crowd.
