Dorset Recreation Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Dorset Recreation Reserve is a large multi-use reserve in Croydon with expansive open grass for off-leash running, sitting alongside soccer and cricket pitches and a Melbourne Water retarding basin. It is roomy and great for fetch, with two honest caveats: the reserve is unfenced, and the retarding basin turns it wet and boggy in winter.

The dog setup

The open green space is off-leash under Maroondah City Council's effective control rule, meaning reliable voice or hand control and an immediate return when called, and you must carry a leash even while the dog is loose. The lead goes back on the walking tracks, including the Dorset Recreation Trail through the reserve, and within 15 metres of organised sport, matches or training. Keep dogs off the turf cricket pitches, and under the Domestic Animals Act greyhounds must be leashed at all times. Carry bags and use the bin near the main carpark.

The vibe

Flat sports fields plus sloping grass give the room, and a covered shelter with seating and a water tap and bowl near the shelter covers the owner side. As a retarding basin, the lower side soaks after rain and through winter, so pack a towel and pick your line. Weekday mid-mornings are quietest; it is busiest early morning, late afternoon and whenever sport is on, which is when the 15 metre rule does the work.

Max: the basin is the tell. After a wet week the low ground goes to mud, so work the upper slopes and bring the towel you will wish you had.

Getting there and parking

Main access and parking are off Jenkins Lane, with pedestrian entries from several surrounding streets including Mirang Avenue, Trawalla Road and Parrs Road. Croydon Station is a longer trip on foot, roughly 20 to 25 minutes, with buses running along Maroondah Highway and Dorset Road.

Close by with the dogs

If the open edges are a problem, the council-highlighted Eastfield Fenced Dog Park is the nearby fully fenced, double-gated option, and Bede Spillane Reserve Fenced Dog Park is another secure alternative. For coffee, The Jolly Miller is a Croydon institution.
