Dorset Recreation Reserve is a large multi-use reserve in Croydon with expansive open grass for off-leash running, alongside soccer and cricket pitches and a Melbourne Water retarding basin. It is roomy and good for fetch, with the caveat that the basin makes it wet underfoot in winter.

The rules. The open green space is off-leash with dogs under effective voice or hand control. Maroondah City Council requires dogs on-leash within 15 metres of shared trails, the playground and organised sport or training. Keep dogs off the turf cricket pitches, and under the Domestic Animals Act greyhounds must be leashed at all times. Carry bags and pick up waste.

What's there. Flat sports fields plus sloping grass, a covered shelter with seating, a water tap and bowl near the shelter, a bin near the main car park and a walking trail through the reserve (leashed on the trail).

Getting there. Main access and parking are off Jenkins Lane, with pedestrian entries from several surrounding streets including Mirang Avenue, Trawalla Road and Parrs Road. It is a longer trip from Croydon Station, roughly 20-25 minutes on foot, with buses along Maroondah Highway and Dorset Road.

Watch-outs. As a retarding basin, the lower side gets very wet and muddy in winter and after rain, so bring a towel. The reserve is unfenced, so reliable recall matters.

When to go. Weekday mid-mornings are quietest. It is busiest early morning, late afternoon and during weekday and weekend sport. Good for a big open run in dry conditions, less so once the basin is boggy.
