Goodwin Park

Goodwin Park is the big community sports ground at the end of Jarvis Lane in Coolangatta, and the City of Gold Coast designates two off-leash dog exercise areas within it. The rest of the park stays on-leash, and dogs are prohibited in the children's playground, so it is a park that rewards knowing where the boundaries sit.

Dog-owner etiquette matters here more than at a purpose-built dog park. The off-leash areas sit within a working sports ground, so when the fields are in use the practical play is the designated dog zones at the quieter end, and on competition days the whole visit may need to shift earlier or move on. The surface is open grass rather than agility equipment, which suits fetch and recall work over obstacle play, and the two designated areas mean a busy patch has an alternative nearby. Water and shade are the usual park caveats: bring your own water and plan around the middle of the day in summer. The skatepark and playground keep non-dog company occupied, and Coolangatta's beachside coffee strip is close enough that the post-park coffee is a five-minute drive rather than an expedition.

Off-leash status

Council signage marks the two off-leash dog exercise areas; outside those zones the leash goes back on and the playground is off limits entirely. The park's scale is its main draw: a large community sports field with room to spread out even when the sports clubs are using part of the ground. Because boundaries can shift with maintenance works, it is worth a quick check of the on-site signage before letting the dog off.

Facilities are practical rather than scenic: public toilets, barbecues, a kids playground, a skatepark and coffee nearby, with the beach end of Coolangatta a short drive away.

Getting there and parking

Access runs via Jarvis Lane, with parking on the Lanham Street side of the park. Early mornings are the quiet window before organised sport takes over the fields.

While you're out there

Coolangatta stacks up well around a park visit: the Point Danger Lookout to Currumbin Alley coastal walk for a leashed leg stretch, and dog-reported coffee at Cafe Kirra or Espresso Cooly on the way home.
