Gipps Street Recreation Precinct Fenced Dog Park

Gipps Street Recreation Precinct Fenced Dog Park is the newest off-leash option in the Penrith area, opened in late 2024 inside Penrith Council's 32-hectare redevelopment of a former waste site at Claremont Meadows. The headline feature is separate fenced zones for small and large dogs, so a nervous spaniel does not have to share grass with the big-dog scrum. Floodlighting extends visits into the evening, which few western Sydney dog parks manage.

The dog setup

Off-leash applies only inside the fenced enclosures; everywhere else in the precinct, including the walking trails, dogs stay on lead. Entry runs through a double-gated airlock, so close one gate before opening the next. Owners stay inside with voice control at all times, use the correct small-dog or large-dog zone, and clean up with the bag dispensers and bins provided. Dogs that are aggressive, in heat or unwell are not welcome, and unattended dogs are a no.

The vibe

Busy, because the park is new and the suburb is growing: weekends and weekday late afternoons draw the crowds, while mid-morning and early afternoon on a weekday are calmer if your dog is easily overwhelmed. Shaded picnic tables and benches ring the enclosures, and dog-friendly drinking fountains cover hydration. The precinct beyond has playgrounds, a skate park and a canteen, so it doubles as a family outing spot.

Max: wait for the first gate to latch before touching the second. An escaped dog loose in a car park this size is not a shortcut worth taking.

Getting there and parking

The precinct sits on Gipps Street, Claremont Meadows NSW 2747, close to the M4 Western Motorway, with an entrance also off Sunflower Drive. More than 500 car spaces sit on site, including accessible bays, so parking is never the bottleneck. Buses connect the area from Penrith Station, but driving is the practical option.

Worth knowing

The precinct runs daily from 6am to 10:30pm, with floodlights over the dog park until around 9pm. The amenities building nearby has accessible toilets and a parents room, a step up from most suburban dog parks. Landscaping is still maturing, so natural shade is limited at the height of summer; bring water and aim for morning or evening on hot days.

Close by with the dogs

Claremont Meadows Fenced Dog Park is the suburb's other enclosed option when this one is packed, and Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs at Orchard Hills is a short drive for serious dog people. The Orchard Hills Cafe covers the coffee stop afterwards.
