Caulfield Park Dog Off Leash Area

Caulfield Park's off-leash area covers the central sporting ovals on Balaclava Road in Caulfield North, a big unfenced stretch of grass that gives dogs room to genuinely run. It is a short walk from Caulfield Station and one of Glen Eira's most-used off-leash spots, with the usual caveat that the space is shared with weekend sport.

The dog setup

The off-leash zone runs across the central ovals whenever no training or match is in progress, so check which grounds are in use before you let the lead go. Under the Glen Eira City Council rules, dogs must be leashed within 20 metres of any sport, barbecue, picnic area or playground, and the Hawthorn Road and Park Crescent ends of the park are on-leash at all times. Dogs are banned from playgrounds, cricket nets and the golf cage entirely.

Because the ovals are completely open to the paths around them, this is a park for dogs with solid recall. Watering stations with bowls sit along the ovals and near the tennis rebound wall, and bag dispensers and bins are spread through the park.

The vibe

This is a proper neighbourhood institution: a duck pond, heritage gardens, a popular perimeter loop and three playgrounds around the edges. Weekday mid-mornings and after 8pm are the quiet windows, while Saturday mornings and weekday evenings from 5pm pack the ovals with dogs and training squads alike. Public toilets sit near Inkerman Road, the pavilion and the Park Crescent playground.

Max: do a lap first and see which ovals are free. On weekend mornings there is usually a match on at least one ground, and the usable space shrinks fast.

Getting there and parking

The park addresses as 280 Balaclava Road, with a car park off Balaclava Road plus street parking around Balaclava, Inkerman and Hawthorn Roads. Tram 3/3a runs along Hawthorn Road and Caulfield Station is an easy walk.

Close by with the dogs

If you want a fence between your dog and the ovals, Pawfield Park Fenced Dog Park at the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve is the council's fully enclosed option a few minutes away. Post-walk, Common Room Co on Kooyong Road welcomes dogs at the outdoor tables, and Las Chicas covers the Balaclava end.
