A fully fenced, secure off-leash run on the northern side of James Reserve in Buninyong, about 15 minutes south of central Ballarat. It is a smaller, quieter enclosure than the bigger Ballarat city parks, which makes it a good pick for dogs that do better away from a crowd.

The rules. Managed by the City of Ballarat. Keep your dog under effective voice or hand control inside the enclosure, and pick up after them - bring your own bags. Union Jack Creek runs unfenced just outside the enclosure, so keep an eye on dogs and children near the water when you are in the adjoining on-leash area.

What's there. Fully enclosed boundaries with secure air-lock double gates, bench seating inside for owners, and a car park off Geelong Road. It is a rustic site: there are no toilets and no tap water, so bring water and a bowl for your dog.

Getting there. On the corner of Geelong Road and Union Jack Lane, Buninyong. Driving from Ballarat, head southeast on the Midland Highway then turn onto Geelong Road. Public transport is limited: the closest hub is Ballarat Station, with the Route 21 bus running through Buninyong. The fenced run sits next to a larger on-leash walking zone, so you can pair a free run with a longer walk.

Nearby with the dogs. Buninyong's main street is a few minutes away. Marshmallow Jam Cafe and Maggie & Kate both have dog-friendly outdoor seating, and The Buninyong Hotel welcomes well-behaved dogs in its beer garden.

When to go. Weekend mornings and Sunday afternoons are the busiest. For a calmer run, aim for a weekday or a Saturday afternoon. Good for reactive dogs who need the place quiet.

No water on site and an unfenced creek next door - fill the bowl before you leave home and keep the lead on until you are through both gates.
