Buninyong Fenced Dog Park (James Reserve)

The Buninyong Fenced Dog Park occupies the northern side of James Reserve at the corner of Geelong Road and Union Jack Lane, about 15 minutes south of central Ballarat. It is a smaller, quieter enclosure than the big Ballarat city parks, which makes it a good pick for dogs that do better away from a crowd.

The dog setup

The enclosure is fully fenced with secure air-lock double gates, and bench seating inside gives owners somewhere to settle. City of Ballarat's dog park rules apply: carry a leash with you, keep your dog in sight and under effective voice or hand control, and pick up after them, so bring your own bags.

It is a rustic site. There are no toilets and no tap water, so pack water and a bowl for your dog. Union Jack Creek runs unfenced just outside the enclosure, so keep dogs and children away from the water when you move into the adjoining on-leash area.

Max: fill the bowl before you leave home and keep the lead on until you are through both gates. No water on site, and the creek next door has no fence at all.

Getting there and parking

Driving from Ballarat, head south-east on the Midland Highway and turn onto Geelong Road; the car park is at the reserve. Public transport is limited, with the closest hub Ballarat Station and the Route 21 bus the only service through Buninyong. The fenced run sits beside a larger on-leash walking zone, so a free run and a longer walk pair easily.

Worth knowing

Weekend mornings and Sunday afternoons are the busiest windows; for a calmer session, aim for a weekday or a Saturday afternoon. The small footprint and quiet setting suit reactive or easily overwhelmed dogs, provided you pick your time.

Close by with the dogs

Buninyong's main street is a few minutes away, and The Buninyong Hotel takes well-behaved dogs in its beer garden for a post-park feed. For a leg stretch with a view, the Mt Buninyong Crater Walk is just up the road, and Brim Brim Gardens offers pet-friendly garden accommodation in the township.
