A short climb to the summit of an extinct volcano in the Mount Buninyong Scenic Reserve, about 15km southeast of Ballarat. The Crater Walk is roughly 1.8km through native gum forest, topping out near 745m with a viewing tower and 360-degree views. Dogs are welcome on lead.

The walk. A short loop with a steep pinch up to the summit and observatory tower. The surface is a bush track through gum forest, so expect some climbing rather than a flat stroll.

Leash status. Dogs must be on lead at all times. Stay on the marked tracks to protect the reserve, and pick up and carry out all waste.

Water. Bring your own water and a bowl - carry enough for a warm-weather climb, as there is nothing reliable on the track for dogs.

Getting there. Mount Buninyong Road is sealed and gives all-weather access from the base up towards the summit, where there is parking. Public transport is limited, so this one is best reached by car. Toilets and picnic tables are available near the top.

Nearby with the dogs. Back in Buninyong, the main street has dog-friendly cafes, and The Buninyong Hotel welcomes dogs in its beer garden. Brim Brim Gardens in Buninyong takes dogs if you want to stay overnight.

When to go. Weekends and sunny afternoons in the warmer months get busy. Early on a weekday is quietest, and the views are at their best after rain clears. Good for dogs that enjoy a short, steep hit of hill rather than distance.

On-lead the whole way and a steep summit pinch - keep the lead short near the lookout tower and the edges up top.
