R.H.L Sparks Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

R.H.L Sparks Reserve is a large off-leash reserve on the corner of Canterbury Road and Middleborough Road in Box Hill, roughly 480 metres long, with wide grassy fields and a few steep embankments to explore. The defining feature is that it shares the site with rugby fields and an archery club, so the 24-hour off-leash access comes with real conditions that change with what else is on.

The dog setup

Off-leash access applies across most of the reserve, but the northern field is used by the Box Hill City Archers, so stay out of that area whenever red flags are flying. Dogs go back on leash if a rugby match is underway. The park is not fully fenced, so effective voice control matters even off-leash, especially near the road boundaries on two sides. If your dog fixates on balls or arrows rather than your voice, this is not the reserve to test that.

Worth knowing

The embankments give dogs terrain to burn energy on beyond flat laps of the grass, and the size means a full throw-and-retrieve session rarely feels crowded even on weekends. The surface dries quickly after rain compared with most reserves in the area, which makes it a useful wet-weather option. Bins are provided but poop bags are not, so bring your own. The reserve is wheelchair accessible with seating near the pavilion.

Max: check for archery signage before you let your dog off toward the northern field. It is not always obvious from a distance, and the boundary between the archery zone and the open grass is not fenced.

Getting there and parking

Parking sits at both ends: the south off Canterbury and Middleborough Roads, and the north off Albion Road, with the southern end usually the easier entry. Drinking water fountains and public toilets are near the pavilion. Bus routes along Middleborough Road pass close by, and Box Hill Central is about five minutes away.
