Wilson Botanic Park is a former quarry turned botanic garden on the Princes Highway in Berwick, with lakes, lookouts and walking trails laid over 39 hectares. Entry is free and it is one of the area's most scenic walks. It is a formal botanic park, so dogs are welcome on the lead only.
The rules. Dogs must be kept on a leash at all times in the park, under the City of Casey's conditions of entry. This is not an off-leash space. Clean up after your dog; waste bags and bins are provided on site. Keep clear of the planted flower beds and any fenced garden areas. The park opens at 7:00 am and closes at 6:00 pm outside daylight saving, and 9:00 pm during daylight saving. One thing to plan around: pets are not allowed on the free weekend Park n Ride shuttle, only assistance animals are.
What's there. A network of paved and gravel paths, including climbs to elevated lake lookouts, with open grassy areas around the lower lake that suit a picnic. There are drinking fountains and toilets near the Visitor Centre and car park, and waste stations through the grounds. The Gathered cafe at the Visitor Centre has outdoor seating where your dog can settle while you grab a coffee.
Getting there. Directly on the Princes Highway, easy off the Monash Freeway at Clyde Road, with parking on site that gets very busy on sunny weekends and public holidays. The nearest train is Berwick station, then a short bus or rideshare. Remember the weekend shuttle does not take pets, so drive in if you have the dog.
When to go. Early morning or late afternoon on a weekday is the calmest. Weekends are busiest between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, with the main entrance path and the lower lake near the cafe the most crowded. For a quieter walk with a reactive dog, take the outer perimeter tracks.
