Wilson Botanic Park Berwick

Wilson Botanic Park is a former quarry turned botanic garden on the Princes Highway in Berwick, with 39 hectares of lakes, lookouts and walking paths. Entry is free and it is one of the most scenic walks in Melbourne's south east. It is a formal botanic park, so the deal for dogs is lead-only the whole way round.

On the lead

Dogs are welcome but must stay on a short leash at all times, and there are no off-leash areas anywhere in the park. Clean up after your dog; free poo bags, waste bins and drinking stations are provided around the grounds. Keep out of the planted garden beds. The park opens 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, extending to 9:00 pm during daylight saving, and closes on Christmas Day and Good Friday. One planning note for walkers: the lake edges are unfenced in places, so keep a reactive or water-curious dog close on the climbs.

Max: Lead-on the whole way here is not negotiable, and it is honestly fine. The quarry rim climbs give a short leash enough to do.

What's there

A network of paved and gravel paths, including climbs to elevated lookouts over the lakes, with open grass around the lower water. The Visitor Centre (10:00 am to 4:00 pm daily) anchors the main entrance, and Gather: Food, coffee & Co on the park's Princes Highway frontage does dog-friendly outdoor seating. No bikes, scooters or alcohol, which keeps the paths predictably calm for a dog on lead.

Getting there and parking

The park sits directly on the Princes Highway, an easy turn off the Monash Freeway at Clyde Road. On-site parking gets very busy on sunny weekends and public holidays. Berwick station is the nearest train, a short bus or rideshare from there.

When to go

Early morning or late afternoon on a weekday is calmest; weekends crowd between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm around the main path and lower lake. For an off-lead session afterwards, Ryelands Drive Reserve Dog Park and Akoonah Park Dog Off Leash Area are both close by. More dog-friendly parks in Victoria are on site.
