Halley Park's off-leash zone is the western end nearest Ethel Street, a clean, spacious grassed patch that's well suited to a run or a game of fetch without much fuss.

The rules. Only the western end of the park is off-leash; everywhere else, including the playground and picnic areas, is on-leash. Dogs must stay 20 metres clear of barbecues, playgrounds and picnic spots, be under effective voice control off-lead, and on a lead no longer than 1.5 metres elsewhere in the park. Cleaning up after your dog is mandatory.

What's there. A wide open grassed area, council bag dispensers when stocked (worth carrying your own as backup), wheelchair-accessible entrances, and picnic tables and a playground in the on-leash section.

Getting there. The park is at 2 Ethel St, Bentleigh. Street parking is available on Ethel Street and nearby residential streets, and it's a short trip from Patterson Station on the Frankston line, with local bus routes also passing nearby.

  • Nearby with the dogs. The Centre Road shopping strip has a good stretch of cafes with outdoor seating for a coffee stop.

Weekend mornings and weekday evenings after 5pm draw the biggest crowds; mid-week mornings and early afternoons are quieter, and the perimeter suits dogs that want a bit more personal space than the middle of the paddock.
