Victory Park's sportsgrounds are Bentleigh's biggest off-leash stretch, open grassy space shaded by mature eucalypts on Patterson Road. It's a genuinely popular local spot, well used by families and dog walkers rather than a quiet backstreet paddock.

The rules. The sportsgrounds are off-leash, but dogs must stay on-leash in the car park, along pathways and near the playground, and stay 20 metres clear of barbecues and picnic areas. Fenced playgrounds and the cricket nets are off-limits to dogs entirely. Off-lead dogs need to be under effective voice control, and on-leash the lead can't be longer than 1.5 metres. Council animal management officers patrol here regularly.

What's there. A dog-friendly water fountain near the playground, plus public toilets, seating, picnic tables and a shaded playground. Waste bags and bins are generally provided, though it pays to carry your own.

Getting there. The park is at 21 Patterson Rd, Bentleigh, near the South Road intersection. On-site parking is available, and it's an easy walk from Patterson Station on the Frankston line.

  • Nearby with the dogs. Patterson Road has a run of cafes with outdoor seating within easy walking distance.

Weekend mornings and weekday evenings between about 4pm and 6pm are the busiest; weekday mornings and early afternoons are calmer if you want more space to yourselves.
