Banksia Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Banksia Reserve at 83 Tramway Parade in Beaumaris is running a fenced off-leash trial in its northeast section, and for bayside dog owners that makes it a rare thing: a genuinely secure space to let a dog run. The trial was set up while the main sports oval was reconstructed, and Bayside City Council has flagged it running to around October 2026 while it weighs community feedback, so treat the setup as temporary and check the council page before you rely on the fence.

The dog setup

The trial area is fully fenced with double gates for entry and exit, sitting off Tramway Parade near the Griffiths Street side. Inside it, dogs are off-lead under effective control with an immediate recall. The usual Bayside conditions apply elsewhere in the reserve: on-lead within 20 metres of the children's playground and barbecues, on-lead across all car parks, and leashed during any organised sport on the grounds. Bag dispensers, bins and a water station are in place, and there are public toilets on site. Because it is a monitored trial, the layout can shift as the oval works progress.

Worth knowing

The playground next door is a real drawcard for families, which means the reserve is busiest around school pickup and on weekend middays. Mid-morning on a weekday is the quiet window if your dog prefers space. A fence with a dog whose recall is still a work in progress is a useful training ground: practise recall here with fewer consequences before moving to an open oval.

Entry points are from Tramway Parade and Griffiths Street in Beaumaris VIC 3193, with on-street parking along Tramway Parade. Bus routes along Balcombe Road put you within walking distance.

Make a day of it
