Newmarket Dog Park

Newmarket Dog Park is the fenced off-leash area inside Grinstead Park on Vigor Street, Alderley, one of the better-known off-leash spots in Brisbane's inner north-west. It is fully fenced with double-gate entry points, so it suits dogs that need a secure space to run without a lead, and it sits inside a much larger public park with mature shade trees.

The rules. Dogs must stay under effective voice control at all times, and need to go back on lead once you step outside the fenced boundary. Bring your own bags even though bins are provided, and pick up promptly as council rangers do patrol and fines apply. Keep registration and vaccinations current, and watch your dog's play style around unfamiliar dogs since the area gets busy.

What's there. The fenced area is genuinely spacious with a mix of open grass and mature trees for shade, water taps for dogs, and benches for owners. Lighting is decent, which makes it workable for an early or after-work visit in the darker months. It sits within Grinstead Park proper, so there is a children's playground and wider parkland alongside the dog area if you want to extend the walk.

Getting there. The park is at 31 Vigor Street, Alderley. On-site parking off Vigor Street is available but fills quickly during peak times, so have a backup street park in mind. It is close enough to Alderley train station for a short walk, and local buses along Samford Road also service the area.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafes along Enoggera Road in Newmarket and around Alderley village generally welcome well-behaved dogs on outdoor tables, and The Spare Room in nearby Grange is a solid coffee stop to build into the same outing. Pet-friendly Airbnb options are reasonably common across Alderley, Newmarket and Grange if you are visiting from further afield.

When to go. Weekday evenings from 5 to 7pm and weekend mornings are the busiest windows, so aim for before 7am or a weekday midday if you want the run of the place. After rain, low-shade patches can turn muddy underfoot, so factor that into paw and coat clean-up plans. Good for social dogs that enjoy a crowd, less so for a nervous dog wanting the park to itself.
