Townsville Main Dog Park

Townsville Main Dog Park on Kimball Street in Aitkenvale is the council-run fenced off-leash facility on the banks of the Ross River, known locally through its host reserve, Rossiter Park. A secure perimeter fence, river-side paths and real shade make it the main enclosed option serving the city's northern suburbs.

The dog setup

The enclosure is fully fenced with water access, shade from mature trees plus a shade sail, and a small agility course for dogs that want a job to do. Off-leash applies only inside the fence; dogs stay on-lead in the car park and the surrounding open parkland, under Townsville City Council's off-leash area rules. Even inside, dogs must stay under effective voice control, holes dug by dogs need filling in, and any dog showing aggression toward others should be removed promptly.

The vibe

A social, well-attended fenced run close to the river rather than a hidden patch of grass. Weekend afternoons draw the biggest crowd and the most energy; weekday mornings are far calmer if your dog prefers space. The wider reserve has a playground, BBQs and toilets nearby, so families tend to fold a dog session into a longer park visit.

Max: the fence makes this one easy, but the river paths outside it are still on-lead territory. Unclip inside the gate, not on the way to it.

Getting there and parking

The address is 3-43 Kimball Street, Aitkenvale QLD 4814, with on-site parking including an accessible bay. Shaded bitumen walking and cycling tracks run alongside the Ross River if you would rather arrive on foot or by bike. Weekend afternoons are the tightest window for parking.

Worth knowing

Being on the river, the park gets the full tropical treatment: plan around summer heat and the wet season, and use the shade sails and taps before your dog overheats. The Ross River parkway paths outside the fence suit a warm-down walk after the fenced session.
