Dog-friendly Berwick: the local's guide
Where the paws actually land in Berwick: market-day off-lead at Akoonah, the botanic park on lead, and the cafe that runs the heater for winter dinners.
We live on Berwick's doorstep, and the boys have paws-on history with most of this list. This is the local read: where dogs fit, what to book, and what to save for a quiet day.
The off-lead heart. Akoonah Park is the pick. The off-lead zone sits past the caravan park, well labelled, with room built for serious fetch, and on market days dogs are welcome through the stalls on a short lead. One of our visits had an art show set up in the middle of the off-lead area, dogs welcome at the gallery. Fencing is not solid and the road is close, so recall matters.
The beautiful one. Wilson Botanic Park is Berwick's showpiece, and the boys loved it. It is strictly on-lead, and fair enough: this is a garden, not a run. It gets very busy, school holidays especially, so think about how your dog handles crowds before committing to the loop. If you love nature walks with the dog at heel, it is worth the trip.
The dinner move. Times Berwick has a dog-friendly outdoor dining area; mention the dog when you book so they seat you right. The staff are dog lovers and will come to say hello, which your dog will enjoy more than the neighbouring table might. Our winter visit was two dogs parked under the table while the heater blared. They rated it.
Coffee by the park. Primary at Pioneers Park backs onto Pioneers Park itself, which makes the easy pairing: a lap of the park, then coffee. It is a local staple and one we use ourselves.
Worth knowing. Rylands Dog Park did the job on our one visit: fine for locals, not worth crossing town for. From the vetted-but-not-yet-paw-tested list, The Main is the next cafe we will report on.
The day shape. A market morning at Akoonah, then Primary for coffee, and Times for dinner if you book ahead. Save Wilson Botanic for a quiet weekday outside school holidays. That is Berwick done the local way.
