Smolt Kitchen

Smolt Kitchen is the neighbourhood cafe and pizzeria on the corner of Hill Street and Lansdowne Crescent in West Hobart, five minutes uphill from the city. Brunch runs all day, sourdough pizza takes over in the evenings, and the footpath tables out front are where the dogs sit.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, including the street-side ones right on the footpath. Staff keep a water bowl on hand and will top it up on request. Inside is for humans only, so your plan lives or dies on table availability: weekend brunch fills the front tables fast, while weekday mornings usually leave room. Keep your dog leashed and settled beside the chair rather than in the walkway, since this corner gets steady foot traffic.

Max: Walked the summit loop first, then claimed the footpath table while the humans argued over who ordered the last brownie.

The vibe

It is a family-run local with a retro, colourful fitout and a busy, friendly service style. The brunch side leans on eggs benny and seasonal plates, and the bread and sourdough base carry through to the evening pizza menu, which also works as takeaway if your dog would rather eat at home. Coffee holds up across both sessions. Hours run 7:30am to 3pm on Mondays and Sundays, and to 8pm the rest of the week.

Getting there and parking

The address is 107-109 Hill Street, West Hobart. Street parking is free on Hill Street and the surrounding residential streets, but the hill fills up, so allow a few minutes on weekends. From the city it is a steady uphill walk, which your dog will count as a warm-up.

Make a day of it

Knocklofty Reserve rises directly behind the cafe, and the Knocklofty Summit Loop is the natural pre-brunch walk. If you want a flat warm-down instead, the Hobart Rivulet Park path curls along the water below. Further afield, John Turnbull Park Fenced Dog Park gives an off-lead run in Lenah Valley, and Peck's on Pine is a stay option in the same suburb worth checking for its pet policy.
