Pet policy
It is one of the easiest on-lead walks in the city under City of Hobart rules, with a fenced off-lead area near the MacFarlane Street footbridge for a proper run.
Hobart Rivulet Park follows the Hobart Rivulet on a flat, well-maintained gravel path linking West Hobart to Cascade Gardens in South Hobart, about 2.7km each way. It is one of the easiest on-lead walks in the city under City of Hobart rules, with a fenced off-lead area near the MacFarlane Street footbridge for a proper run.
Leash status
Dogs stay on lead along the main track. The off-lead exercise area near the MacFarlane Street footbridge is roughly 200m long and 30m wide, fenced and open for a free run. Keep dogs clear of the South Hobart oval and other formal sports grounds along the route, and leashed and under control around joggers and commuters at busy times.
The walk
The path is flat and easy underfoot, following the water the whole way, and the rivulet is one of the more reliable spots in Hobart to spot a platypus, usually at dawn or dusk. Allow an hour and a half to two hours return at a relaxed pace. Cascade Gardens at the southern end has toilets, picnic tables and barbecues if you want to make a morning of it.
Max: stick to the lead on the main track and only let your dog off at the fenced MacFarlane Street area. It keeps things simple around the joggers and cyclists who use this path daily.
Hazards
The rivulet can rise quickly after heavy rain, so take care near the water's edge in wet weather and expect mud on the verges.
Getting there
By car, head up Macquarie Street, onto Cascade Road, then McRobies Road for the lower car park at Cascade Gardens, or find street parking around MacFarlane Street. Metro Tasmania buses on the Cascade Road corridor run close to the track, and foot access points are dotted along the path from Molle Street through to Fitzroy Place.
