Hobart Rivulet Park

Hobart Rivulet Park follows the Hobart Rivulet on a flat, well-maintained gravel path linking West Hobart to Cascade Gardens in South Hobart, and it is one of the easiest on-lead walks in the city, with a fenced off-lead area near the MacFarlane Street footbridge for a proper run.

The rules. Dogs must stay on lead along the main track. The off-lead exercise area near the MacFarlane Street footbridge is roughly 200m long and 30m wide, fenced and open for a free run. Keep dogs clear of the South Hobart oval and other formal sports grounds along the route, and stay leashed and under control around joggers and commuters, especially at busy times.

What's there. Dog waste bags and bins are provided along the track, including at the MacFarlane Street area. Cascade Gardens at the southern end has toilets, picnic tables and barbecues if you want to make a morning of it.

Getting there. By car, head up Macquarie Street, turn onto Cascade Road, then McRobies Road for the lower car park at Cascade Gardens, or find street parking around MacFarlane Street. Metro Tasmania buses on the Cascade Road corridor (routes 457/458) run close to the track. On foot, access points run the length of the path from Molle Street through Washington Street and Fitzroy Place.

Watch-outs. The rivulet can rise quickly after heavy rain, so take care near the water's edge in wet weather.

Nearby with the dogs. Rivulet Cafe sits right by the track near the Cascade Brewery end, with outdoor seating that welcomes dogs after your walk.

Weekday mornings (8-9am) and evenings (5-6pm) are busy with commuters, so if you want the path to yourself, aim for a weekday between 10am and 2pm. Weekend mornings draw families and locals but rarely feel crowded on a track this long. Good for confident on-lead walkers and dogs that enjoy a controlled off-lead sprint at the end.
