Knocklofty Summit Loop

Knocklofty Summit Loop is a 4 km bushland circuit in West Hobart, climbing through eucalypt forest to lookouts over kunanyi/Mt Wellington and the Derwent Estuary. It is one of the less steep hikes near the city centre, though rocky underfoot in places, and it takes most walkers around 75 to 90 minutes.

The walk. A moderate, 4 km loop on a rocky 4WD fire trail, with some steep sections mixed among gentler stretches. Expect eucalypt forest, native wildflowers, and a detour past the Frog Ponds wetland habitat before the climb to the summit lookouts. Walking tracks are shared with cyclists, so stay alert on the wider trail sections.

The rules. Dogs must stay on lead throughout Knocklofty Reserve, managed by the City of Hobart, with one exception: the stretch from the Forest Road car park to Poets Road and Fielding Drive is a declared off-lead zone during set daylight hours. Dogs must not chase wildlife, and wallabies are common here, so keep control in mind even where off lead is allowed. Stick to marked roads and tracks to protect the reserve's biodiversity. Dog bags and bins are provided at the main entrances.

Hazards. The main car park can have potholes, so watch your footing near vehicles. Underfoot, the fire trail has steep, rocky patches that can be uneven for paws and ankles alike.

Getting there. Drive to the end of Forest Road, West Hobart, for the main Knocklofty parking and picnic area. Parking is free but limited, so arrive early on weekends. Metro Bus Route 540 runs from Hobart to West Hobart and Mt Stuart, with stops on Forest Road and Mt Stuart Road within walking distance of the entrance. Three picnic tables sit near the main car park, and signage with maps is thorough throughout, but there are no public toilets on-site.

Nearby with the dogs. Afterwards, refuel at Smolt Kitchen in West Hobart, and if you are staying over, Peck's on Pine is a dog-friendly option in the same suburb.

When to go. Cooler mornings suit the climb best, and the off-lead hours make an early start worthwhile if your dog is reliable around wildlife. Good for confident hikers and dogs comfortable with rocky, uneven ground rather than nervous walkers or very young pups.
