Banks and Brown

Banks and Brown is part cafe, part plant shop at 104A Sturt Road, Warradale, in Adelaide's southern suburbs, and its garden seating out the back has quietly become the local morning-walk destination for dog owners. The cafe side sells coffee, matcha and a rolling cabinet of decadent bakes; the retail side sells hundreds of cacti and houseplants. Dogs are warmly received in the outdoor garden area.

The dog setup

Dogs are permitted in the outdoor garden seating only, so the plant-filled interior stays a browse-while-your-dog-waits arrangement. The garden is leafy and shaded but on the cosier side, which makes it ideal for a calm dog and a long sit rather than a high-energy meetup. Water bowls are provided, and staff are known for being friendly and patient with regulars and their pets.

The menu

The food list is deliberately tight: proper barista coffee, matcha and hot chocolate, toasties, and a bakery lineup that earns the cafe its following, from pistachio knafeh cookies to Bueno brownies and a well-regarded caramel slice. Hours run 6:30am to 1:30pm on weekdays and 8am to noon on weekends, so it is strictly a mornings-and-lunch kind of place.

Getting there and parking

There is on-site parking directly at the cafe, with street parking on Sturt Road and the neighbouring side streets as backup. Weekends trade short and busy, so an early arrival secures the best garden table.

While you're out there

For a proper off-lead run either side of coffee, the Dover Square Reserve Fenced Dog Park at South Brighton is a short drive away, and Hazelmere Road Reserve Fenced Dog Park at Glengowrie has separate big and small dog areas. On the cafe circuit, Alimentary Eatery at Brighton is a solid dog-friendly alternative.
