Mon Lunch Bar & Cafe

Mon Lunch Bar & Cafe works the Buckingham Drive end of Wangara's industrial estate, a Vietnamese lunch bar that has quickly built a following on the strength of its banh mi. It runs Monday to Friday only, 6:30am to 3pm, and dogs are welcome in the casual outdoor seating out the front, which makes it an easy coffee-and-roll stop if the dog rides to work with you.

The dog setup

The outdoor seating is where dogs go, and the setup is deliberately quick and casual rather than a linger-all-morning kind of place. Keep your dog leashed and out of the foot traffic that surges through an industrial estate at lunchtime. Water bowls are not a given at this price-and-speed end of the market, so pack your own, and order before the midday rush if you want a table with room for a dog.

Worth knowing

The banh mi is the reason people drive here: made to order with generous, crispy roast pork, fresh pate, balanced pickled vegetables, chilli and coriander, with lemongrass beef and chicken among the other rolls. Alongside the banh mi there are classic lunch bar hot and cold rolls, fresh salads, homemade vegetable spring rolls, breakfast options and properly strong Vietnamese-style coffee. Large platters and catering are available on request, which tells you how loyal the local workforce is.

Getting there

The shop is at 65 Buckingham Drive, Wangara, a short hop off Wanneroo Road in Perth's northern suburbs, with free parking directly out front and step-free access. Weekend travellers should note the Monday to Friday rhythm; the lunch peak runs roughly 11:30am to 1pm.

While you're out there

For an off-leash run before or after lunch, the Edgar Griffiths Dog Park in Wanneroo and the Kingsway Fenced Dog Park in Madeley are both close. If you want a slower, sit-down dog friendly cafe in the same industrial pocket, The Haystack Cafe and Nook & Co Cafe are both nearby and put water bowls out for dogs.
