The Haystack Cafe

The Haystack Cafe serves Balinese-inspired Indonesian food in the Wangara industrial pocket, and it has quietly built one of the bigger followings in Perth's north: satay, beef rendang and nasi goreng rather than the usual smashed avo. Dogs are welcome in the shaded alfresco seating, which makes it an easy long-lunch stop with a dog in tow.

The dog setup

Dogs join you in the alfresco area, which is shaded and easy to settle into, with water bowls usually available. Keep your dog leashed and under control, because this is a busy family venue with a children's play corner and a fair bit of movement around the tables. The access is flat and straightforward, so prams, wheels and paws all get in easily.

The vibe

The kitchen leans into authentic Indonesian dishes, with the satay the standout and beef rendang and nasi goreng on the regular list. There is a bacon benedict for the breakfast traditionalists, and portions run generous across the board. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, 7am to 3pm, and closes Monday and Tuesday. Best mid-morning or early afternoon outside the lunch rush if you want a calmer table; this is a sit-down meal destination rather than a quick coffee stop.

Max: Rendang for the humans, shade for me, and nobody rushing the table.

Getting there

The cafe is at 1/25 Automotive Drive in Wangara, with dedicated parking bays and street parking right at the door, so unloading the dog is a matter of metres rather than a hike across a car park.
