Ichiyon cafe

Ichiyon Cafe is a small Japanese-influenced cafe on Ourimbah Road in Tweed Heads, with a following built on karaage, onigiri and rice sandwiches rather than the usual big-breakfast formula. It is casual and quick, and dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, which makes it a good stop mid-walk rather than a long-haul brunch destination.

The dog setup

Dogs join you in the designated outdoor seating area on a short lead, close to your table. As with most NSW cafes, the indoor space is reserved for people. Water bowls are typically available, but with a compact frontage it is worth carrying your own collapsible bowl as a backup. The footpath gets passing foot traffic, so a dog that settles through movement and noise will have the easier time.

The menu leans Japanese cafe style: crispy karaage, fresh onigiri, rice bowls and the wagyu burger regulars keep coming back for. Reviewers call out the friendly staff and the prices, and the whole thing runs at takeaway pace. Weekday service runs 6:30am to 1:30pm, Saturday evening is 4pm to 8:30pm, and Sunday is closed, so it is a working-week morning spot first and foremost.

Getting there and parking

It sits in central Tweed Heads, an easy walk from the state border if you are staying on the Coolangatta side. Free street parking is available on the surrounding streets, though the bays near the shopfront turn over steadily through the morning.

The Tweed River Walk is close by for a flat riverside loop either side of lunch, and the beaches across the border are minutes away. Dayo Cafe and Bambi Deluxe are nearby dog-friendly alternates if the outdoor tables are taken.
