Mt. Joy Cafe

Mt. Joy Cafe is a busy ground-floor spot in the Ergon Building at 420 Flinders Street, a go-to for city workers and a natural rest stop for anyone walking a dog through the Townsville CBD. Dogs are welcome at the street-side footpath tables while you order.

The dog setup

Pull up at the outdoor footpath seating and order from there; indoors is service animals only. The footpath tables sit on a covered city verandah, which helps in the tropics. Water is not guaranteed at the footpath spots, so bring a collapsible bowl, especially through the build-up when afternoons turn hot. It is a quick refuel stop rather than a long sit.

The vibe and the menu

The cafe built its name on freshly baked loaded cookies and a friendly, quick team, alongside an all-day breakfast-into-lunch menu: toasties, lasagne with chips, healthy grab-and-go salads and wraps, plus barista coffee with flavoured iced lattes for the heat. It runs weekday mornings only, 6:15am to 2pm, closed weekends.

Getting there and parking

Find it on Flinders Street in the CBD. Paid street parking runs along Flinders Street with nearby lots as the fallback, and it is very walkable from across the city centre, including from the river end.

Close by with the dogs

The Ross Creek paths nearby make an easy on-lead loop, and Queens Gardens in North Ward allows dogs on lead through its heritage pathways. For another CBD coffee with a dog, Hoi Polloi - Espresso Bar is close by, and Turvey Bakehouse is in the same block. Chubby Magpie Coffee Roasters is worth the walk to North Ward.
