Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters

Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters is a small-batch roastery and cafe on Johnston Street in Stratford, a relaxed pocket on Cairns' northside that most visitors speed through on the way to the northern beaches. The roaster works in the back, the coffee is North Queensland specialty, and the covered outdoor patio is where the dogs sit.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating, which sits under a covered patio, a genuine advantage in a town where the wet season can turn a coffee run into a weather decision. Water bowls are usually out front, and staff have been known to slip a treat across the counter, though bring your own if your dog is fussy. Keep your dog leashed and settled close to the table, and note the seating fills quickly on weekend mornings when the roastery draws its regulars.

Worth knowing

The cafe roasts its own beans in small batches, so the coffee is the headline, with beans available to take home. The cabinet does a strong line in house-made sweets: chocolate banana bread and almond croissants get the regular mentions, and toasties cover the savoury side. Hours run 6:30am to 2:30pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 1pm Saturday, and the cafe is closed Sundays, so weekend dog mornings mean Saturday or nothing. Hours can shift, so check before a long drive out.

Getting there and parking

The roastery sits at 29 Johnston Street, Stratford, just off the Capt Cook Highway route north. Free street parking is available around Johnston Street and neighbouring Stratford Parade, and it rarely gets tight outside the school run. The Barron River bridges are minutes away, making this an easy first stop before the beaches or the range.

Make a day of it

Bunny Jarrett Park Dog Off Leash Area at Whitfield gives an off-lead run a few minutes away, and Touch Park Fenced Dog Park near the airport covers the southern side. For a second coffee stop with the same energy, Shaka Cafe up in Freshwater works well on a red dirt morning. If you are staying over, Stratford Caravan Park is in the same suburb, right on the river.
