Barron River Hotel

The Barron River Hotel, known to locals as the Old Stratty, sits on Stratford Parade in Stratford, about 10 minutes north of the Cairns CBD. It is one of the older hotels in the region, trading as a lodging house from the 1880s before becoming a pub in 1927, and today it runs a bistro, cold beer, live music and sport with the Kuranda Scenic Railway line passing close enough to watch the carriages go through. The wraparound verandah is the dog-friendly heart of the place.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the verandah, balcony and other outdoor seating areas, leashed and close to your table, with no fee for bringing them along. The indoor bistro and gaming rooms are off limits apart from assistance animals, so plan on the verandah. Water bowls are typically available on the patio and staff are accommodating, though bringing a travel bowl is never a bad idea in the tropics. Verandah tables with a view of the railway line are the prize seats, for the dog as much as anyone.

Worth knowing

The bistro does classic pub meals, with a well-reviewed southern fried chicken burger and steak among the regular orders, and the deck carries live sport and music through the week. Doors open from 10am daily, running late into the night on Thursday to Saturday. There is a kids playground and games room inside for families, but dog territory is strictly the verandah side.

Getting there and parking

Stratford sits on the Captain Cook Highway between the Cairns city centre and the northern beaches, so the hotel works as a lunch detour heading north or an easy dinner run from town. The hotel has its own free on-site car park with street parking along Stratford Parade as backup, and the verandah is reached at ground level.

Close by with the dogs

Jalarra Park, one of the city's largest open spaces, is right in Stratford with a council off-leash area by the tree line for a pre-lunch run. For a bigger setup with a swim, Impey Reserve Dog Off Leash Area up the highway has a fenced exercise area and a lake paddle. On the coffee side, Sipping Duck Coffee Roasters on Johnston Street welcomes dogs outdoors and roasts on site.

Late afternoon on the verandah is the classic play: cold drink, pub meal, a train rumbling past and a settled dog at your feet.
