Violet's of Sassafras

Violet's of Sassafras works out of a weatherboard cottage on the Mount Dandenong Tourist Road, and the counter cabinet does most of the talking before you reach the register: basque cheesecake, warm scones, sausage rolls, toasties and the brownies that keep locals coming back. Doors open at 10am and the last pours run through until mid afternoon, later on weekends.

Worth knowing

Hours run 10am to 4:30pm on weekdays and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Parking along the Sassafras strip is free but tight on weekends, when the village draws browsers from across the Dandenong Ranges, so come early or walk a few minutes from the side streets. There is no dedicated dog run here, so on wet days the covered veranda is the sensible spot and a towel in the boot earns its place.

A stop at Violet's pairs naturally with the walk country around it.
