General Store at The Heart

The General Store at The Heart is a small community cafe at Shop 4/20 Canterbury Drive, Salisbury Heights, run as a social enterprise that trains and employs young people with disability. The menu is homely rather than fancy: solid coffee, iced chocolates, breakfast and brunch plates, cinnamon rolls and the much-loved crumpet special, plus focaccia pizza slices and vegetarian and vegan-friendly options. It is a genuinely local room, with a kiddie play area inside and a comfortable veranda out front.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the outdoor veranda seating. Keep your dog leashed and settled beside the table so the space stays easy for other patrons, and note that the indoor area, including the play corner, is for people. Water bowls are usually put out for visiting dogs, so you may not need to unpack your own, but confirm with staff on the day.

Worth knowing

Hours are Monday to Friday 7:30am to 3pm, Saturday 8:30am to 1:30pm, closed Sundays, and the kitchen winds up earlier than the doors: around 2pm on weekdays and 1:30pm Saturdays. It gets lively with families around weekend brunch. This is a morning or early-lunch stop rather than an afternoon one.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits in a small suburban complex on Canterbury Drive with free parking on site. The surrounding backstreets are residential, so a GPS pin is more reliable than landmarks.

Close by with the dogs

The Canterbury Drive Reserve Fenced Dog Park is on the same strip, with separate large and small dog sections, and the wider reserve adds a playground, courts and open grass for a leg-stretch either side of coffee. City of Salisbury rules keep dogs on a 2-metre lead in general reserves between 8am and 6:30pm, with the small-dog section running an individual-use trial from 2pm to 6:30pm daily. For a longer outing, the Upper Little Para Trail runs through the suburb, and the Happy Home Reserve Fenced Dog Park is a short drive away.
