Lava Coffee

Lava Coffee is a casual city espresso bar on the Parkes side of the Civic boundary in Canberra, popular with public servants and locals for specialty coffee and quick, wholesome food. It is a bustling weekday coffee stop rather than a destination cafe, and it runs from 7am on weekdays, 8am Sundays, until mid afternoon.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor and footpath seating, with indoor space reserved for assistance animals. Staff are generally easygoing about well-behaved dogs at the tables, but there is no set water station, so bring your own bowl.

The footpath tables sit on a working street, so a dog that startles at foot traffic is better placed at the outer edge of the seating. Weekday mornings are the busiest window; late morning and the weekend are calmer.

The vibe

Modern, quick and food-serious: the espresso is well regarded, and the kitchen turns out granola, healthy bowls and fast gourmet lunch plates rather than deep-fried cafe staples. Most of the room is in and out inside half an hour.

The food is the quiet strength: it holds the quality through the lunch rush, and the prawn toast and bacon-and-egg orders get repeat mention from regulars. If you are parking the dog at a table for a proper breakfast, weekdays before 8am are the calmest slot.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits near Moore Street, a short walk from the Civic centre. Metered street parking fills during business hours, and the Wilson Parking garage on Akuna Street is the reliable fallback a couple of minutes away.
