OOM Energy Wulguru

OOM Energy Wulguru is a retro-themed diner, service station and mini supermarket rolled into one stop on Stuart Drive at Wulguru, on the southern run into Townsville. The draw for travellers is the nostalgic 1950s diner fit-out of red and blue booths and classic memorabilia, paired with straightforward roadhouse food, coffee and fuel in the same stop, and well-behaved dogs on a short leash are welcome at the outdoor tables out front.

The dog setup

Dogs sit with you at the outdoor seating on the forecourt, so this is an on-lead stop rather than a run-around one. The main air-conditioned diner room is not confirmed as dog-friendly, so plan on the outside tables and check with staff when you arrive. On-site water for dogs is not confirmed either, so pack a bowl in the car. Given the forecourt is a working service station with bowsers and constant car movement, keep the leash short and your dog close to the table.

Max: we parked next to the fuel pumps and I got bacon, which almost made up for not being allowed near the bowsers.

Worth knowing

It opens at 4am and closes at 10pm every day of the week, which makes it one of the few genuinely early options around Townsville for a pre-dawn departure feed. The menu is roadhouse classics done properly: hamburgers, nachos, cooked breakfasts with bacon and barista coffee, served in a room dressed up with 1950s Americana. The mini mart covers the basics if you need supplies for the road, and the same stop fills the tank.

Getting there and parking

Find it at 336 Stuart Drive, Wulguru, on the busy Bruce Highway corridor south of the Townsville CBD. Parking is directly in front of the diner and servo, so pull in, order at the counter and take the outdoor tables. Because it is a fast-moving road stop, it suits a break on the drive rather than a destination lunch, and it works well paired with an off-lead park run either side.

Close by with the dogs

Federal Park Dog Park in Annandale and Apex Dog Park in Rasmussen both give dogs a proper off-lead run within a short drive. For a sit-down cafe stop closer to the city, The Gypsea Collective in Mundingburra and Missy Moo's Coffee in Cranbrook are solid alternatives.
