Old speak

Old Speak is a small, Japanese-inspired cafe tucked into the 2nd Avenue Plaza off Beaufort Street in Mount Lawley, trading on serious coffee and a quietly inventive toastie list. The plaza setting puts it a step back from the Beaufort Street traffic, which makes it an easy stop with a dog in tow.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables in the shared plaza courtyard, on lead and settled beside your table. The interior is compact, so plan to sit outside with your dog. Bring your own water bowl to be safe, and keep your dog close while other patrons move through the plaza seating.

Worth knowing

The coffee is the draw, including pour-overs and matcha, and the toasties have a following: the curry potato, the kimchi toastie and the wasabi salmon sandwich are the ones people order twice. Hours run 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 1pm on weekends. Early mornings are the quiet window if your dog prefers calm.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at Shop 10, 755 Beaufort Street, inside the 2nd Avenue Plaza. There is free parking in the plaza car park plus street parking on 2nd Avenue and nearby residential streets, so check the signs. Buses run constantly along Beaufort Street if you are arriving on foot from elsewhere.

Close by with the dogs

The Inglewood fenced dog park is a short drive north for an off-leash run, and Beaufort Street's shopfronts make an easy on-lead stroll. Local and Aesthetic and Sista's On Beaufort are both dog-friendly options on the same strip if Old Speak's tables are taken.
