Brown Bear Eatery sits at 33A Berrigan Road in Miandetta, the quiet pocket of South Devonport, and it works for dog owners for one simple reason: the outdoor tables look straight onto the park next door. Order at the counter, take a seat under an umbrella with your dog at your feet, and you have an easy breakfast stop without anyone waiting in the car.

The cafe sits directly beside a local park with a children's playground, so a walk before or after eating is as simple as crossing the grass. Water bowls and treats are not confirmed, so pack your own bowl. If the outside tables are full on a busy weekend morning, check with staff before settling in.

The vibe

This is a relaxed, family-run brunch cafe that closes mid afternoon, so it is strictly a breakfast and lunch proposition. The menu runs from scrambled eggs on toast and eggs benedict to the corn fritters locals line up for, plus pancakes, generous kids platters and a carrot cake worth saving room for. Coffee has a strong local following, and there are vegan and vegetarian options across the menu.

Getting there and parking

From central Devonport, head south over the Mersey and follow Berrigan Road into Miandetta; it is only a few minutes' drive. There is a free on-site car park as well as easy street parking out front. Opening hours are 8am to 2pm, Tuesday to Saturday, with Sunday and Monday closed, so plan around the weekend brunch rush or come early.

While you're out there

For an off lead run before breakfast, the Devonport Dog Park is a short drive away, and Back Beach gives you sand and surf for a proper leg stretch. On the coffee trail afterwards, Lumen Coffee Lounge across the river in East Devonport keeps a dedicated dog spot out front, and The Little Goat is another dog friendly table in town.
