Lumen Coffee Lounge

Lumen Coffee Lounge is a locally owned cafe at 13-15 Murray Street in East Devonport, a couple of minutes from the Spirit of Tasmania terminal. The reason to bring the dog is built into the place: a purpose-built dog pen and deck out the front, so your dog has a secure spot while you stay in sight through the cafe window.

The dog setup

Dogs stay in the dedicated outdoor pen and deck rather than inside, and you can watch them through the window while you order or sit down. Staff usually put water out, and there are dog treats plus pup-a-chinos with sprinkles on hand, so it goes further than most footpath setups. Settle your dog before you step inside to order so the first minute does not turn into a bark-off at the glass.

The vibe and the menu

The coffee is roasted by Leaping Goat from Quoiba, and the brew pulls steady praise. Food runs to hearty toasties, light breakfast options and a cabinet with vanilla slice and jelly slice. There is a kids corner too, so it handles families well. Hours are 6am to 2pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1:30pm Saturday, closed Sundays, which makes it a handy last stop before a ferry or the first flat white off one.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs directly out front on Murray Street, and the ferry terminal is minutes away by car or on foot. If you are walking in from the terminal with the dog, take the esplanade rather than the main road.

Close by with the dogs

Devonport City Council allows off-leash exercise on East Devonport Beach from Wright Street heading east towards Pardoe and Moorlands Beach, with the grassed area between Wright and Tarleton Streets also open to dogs under effective control. The coastal walking track itself is on-lead, and you must carry a leash even inside the off-leash zones. Across the river, the fenced Devonport Dog Park sits by the aquatic centre on Steele Street, and Back Beach is the sandy option on the western side.
